Abstract

The article documents the process and results of the research project FLS - Harmonization of Technical Objects, which was carried out at the Center for Applied Research and Technology (ZAFT) at the University of Applied Sciences Dresden on behalf of the ITKo from April 2022 to February 2023. The aim of the project was the analysis of the OKSTRA lists of technical meanings. Each federal state in Germany has its own list of technical meanings. Some of these 16 lists of technical meanings have different domains of discourse, contain synonyms and homonyms, and have different attributive metadata. In order to meet current IT requirements and enable future use in Building Information Modeling (BIM), the technical meanings need to be harmonized and restructured. While the currently valid technical meanings are kept as a "flat" list, the harmonized object classes are to prepare the object-oriented modeling within OKSTRA. The ITKo expert group "FLS - Technical Object Model over the Life Cycle of the Road" is concerned with the development of a technical object model to ensure a uniform exchange of information across national borders. The long-term goal is to create a data model with object classes that can map information on all physical and functional objects over the entire life cycle of a road. This model is to be applied uniformly and replaces the technical meanings. The central task of the project is the creation of harmonized object classes. These are analytically formed from the more than 30,000 technical meanings of the federal states. This task aims to obtain a (formalized) understanding of which model contents are currently already represented in the lists of technical meanings. After completion of the project, the model of the harmonized object classes shall be the basis for an OKSTRA technical model "Surveying", which shall be used in the future for the as-built documentation without the heterogeneous lists of technical meanings. The FLS group will do the subsequent modeling and coordination with the already existing objects in OKSTRA which is not part of this project. The introduction of a more object-oriented modeling can also lead to necessary adaptations of existing work processes. For example, a revision of existing drawing rules will be necessary. The research project was commissioned by the expert group and supported by its members. During the harmonization process, the basic procedure was coordinated with the contact persons of the federal states and interim results were validated. As an outlook, it is presented how feature servers are used in BIM projects so that CAD, BIM and GIS software can use the same technical meanings across domains.
