A Real-Time GTFS-Based Assessment of Public Transport Accessibility and Service Delays uri icon Artikel

Abstract

  • Abstract Accessibility analysis is essential for understanding the availability of public transport (PT). Typically, PT scheduled data is used to calculate accessibility, which cannot capture the actual movement of PT due to delays. PT faces delays due to traffic jams, incidents, and higher dwell times during peak hours. To compute the variability of accessibility due to delays, real-time accessibility assessment provides a better understanding of the differences compared to scheduled PT accessibility. In this study, we assess accessibility using both scheduled and real-time data. We use cumulative opportunity measures to generate accessibility isochrones in 60-min cut-off time. We perform case studies for the metropolitan region of Munich, Germany, and calculate how delays affect population accessibility from Munich main station to reach destinations. We quantify and visualise the travel time differences for scheduled and real-time accessibility. The findings show that approximately 7.71% of the population is unreachable in real-time within 60-min cut-off times. We also analyse hospital accessibility and found that 7.04% of the population are unreachable from population grids to hospitals using PT. These analyses provide a proof-of-concept for more sophisticated real-time accessibility analysis with respect to other points of interest, travel durations, and starting times.
